 Allah's Name 'As-Sami' (The All-Hearing)

We will discuss the manifestations of Allah's Name 'As-Sami' (The All Hearing) in the sacred month of Ramadan.

The close connection between Allah's Name As-Sami and making Du'a

What may attract your attention when pondering over the Noble Ayaat of Surat Al-Baqarah which are about fasting is that the Noble Ayah that is about the virtue of making Du'a (supplication) comes among these Ayaat; Allah the Almighty says:

(And when My slaves ask you (O Muhammad PBUH) concerning Me, then (answer them), I am indeed near (to them by My Knowledge). I respond to the invocations of the supplicant when he calls on Me (without any mediator or intercessor). So let them obey Me and believe in Me, so that they may be led aright.)

[Al-Baqarah, 186]

It seems that Allah the Almighty orders us to make Du'a to Him after we observe fasting, since making Du'a to Allah is one of the main purposes of this religious obligation.

Actually, Du'a is closely related to Allah's Name As-Sami', in the sense that Allah the Almighty hears you wherever you are. Hence, if you are at home, at work, on a plane, on a ship, at the bottom of a valley, or in a forest surrounded by dangerous animals, etc, Allah hears you. Furthermore, Allah the Almighty hears you in every situation; whether you make Du'a openly (with your tongue) or secretly (in your heart) since He is As-Sami', and the One Who responds to your Du'a.

Our Master Yunus (PBUH) makes Du'a to Allah when he was under three layers of darkness; the darkness of the whale's belly, the darkness of the bottom of the sea, and the darkness of the night. Allah the Almighty says:

(And (remember) Dhan-Nun (Jonah), when he went off in anger, and imagined that We shall not punish him (i.e. the calamites which had befallen him)! But he cried through the darkness (saying): La ilaha illa Anta [none has the right to be worshipped but You (O Allah)], Glorified (and Exalted) are You [above all that (evil) they associate with You]. Truly, I have been of the wrong-doers."* So We answered his call, and delivered him from the distress. And thus We do deliver the believers (who believe in the Oneness of Allah, abstain from evil and work righteousness).)

[Al-Anbiya', 87-88]

Bear in mind that when Allah, may His Glory be glorified, responds to the Du'a of one of His worshippers, this does not hinder Him from answering the Du'a of someone else, because He can answer the Du'a of all His worshippers, and He can hear them all at the same time. In contrast, as a human being, you cannot understand two people talking to you at the same time. Thus, if all people on earth make Du'a to Allah the Almighty, the Creator of the universe and earth, at the same time, He can hear them all and can respond to all their prayers at the same time.

(It was narrated that the mother of believers Mrs. A'ishah, may Allah be pleased with her, said: "Praise be to Allah Whose hearing encompasses all voices. Khawlah came to the Messenger of Allah complaining about her husband, but I could not hear what she said. Then Allah, the Mighty and Sublime, revealed: "Indeed Allah has heard the statement of her (Khaulah bint Tha'labah) that disputes with you (O Muhammad PBUH) concerning her husband (Aus bin As-Samit), and complains to Allah. And Allah hears the argument between you both. Verily, Allah is All-Hearer, All-Seer."[Al-Mujadil, 1].)

Some scholars said, "As-Sami' is the One Who answers your Du'a during times of hardship, Who removes your afflictions and calamities when you seek refuge in Him, Who forgives your sins when you ask Him for His Forgiveness, and Who accepts your excuses when you turn to Him in repentance.  Allah the Almighty says:

(Glorified (and Exalted) be He (Allah) [above all that (evil) they associate with Him] [Tafsir Qurtubi, Vol. 10, Page 204] Who took His slave (Muhammad PBUH) for a journey by night from Al-Masjid-al-Haram (at Makkah) to the farthest mosque (in Jerusalem), the neighborhood whereof We have blessed, in order that We might show him (Muhammad PBUH) of Our Ayat (proofs, evidences, lessons, signs, etc.). Verily, He is the All-Hearer, the All-Seer.)

[Al-Isra', 1]

According to the context of this Ayah which mentions the event of Isra' and miraj (the miraculous night journey), one may think that it would be concluded with "Certainly, Allah has power over all things". However, Allah the Almighty says at the end of this Ayah:

(Verily, He is the All-Hearer, the All-Seer.)

[Al-Isra', 1]

Actually, the event of Isra' and Miraj took place as a reward to the Prophet, may Allah's Peace and Blessings be upon him, and as a means of honoring him after being treated badly by the people of At-Taif. They abused him and harmed him physically (they threw stones at him). Allah the Almighty heard the heart-touching Du'a made by the Noble Prophet after that event, so He says:

(Verily, He is the All-Hearer, the All-Seer.)

[Al-Isra', 1]

During the month of Ramadan, you enjoy the feeling of nearness and proximity to Allah the Almighty. Moreover, you believe with certainty that Allah the Almighty hears your prayers, so you make Du'a at the time of Iftar (the meal to break the fast after sunset) since Du'a at that time is more likely to be accepted by Allah the Almighty. The Prophet, may Allah's Peace and Blessings be upon him, said:

(When the fasting person breaks his fast, his supplication is not turned back.)

[Ibn Majah]

Also, remembering Allah the Almighty and invoking Him in seclusion at the time just before dawn will make you feel with all your heart that He hears your Du'a and that He will respond to it.
