Islamic selected passages (12): Imortance of Dialogue between parents and children

In the Name of Allah, The Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Praise be to Allah, The Lord (The One and Only) of the Worlds, and blessings and peace be upon our Master Muhammad, the Truthful and the Faithful.

Dr. Muhammad Rateb Al-Nabulsi:

The Muslim father should undertake taking care of his children's religious education. Therefore, he is supposed to explain to them the religious matters through having a conversation with them from time to time, such as sitting with them every two weeks or each week for this purpose. Let this conversation be two hours while having dinner.  During this time, the Muslim father should ask his child about the matters he has learned from the Islamic education teacher at  school, like the Ayaat that should be recited during Salat, the evidence that Salah is obligatory, and the benefits of Salah. Our households lack such a dialogue between parents and their children and between husbands and wives.

Interviewer:

I know that you have a good experience in education, so what is the educational impact of this dialogue on children? I mean, why can I not teach my child the information he needs directly? Why should there be a dialogue?

Dr. Muhammad Rateb Al-Nabulsi:

Indoctrination is one of the most unsuccessful methods in education. For instance, if you, as a father, instruct your son not to drive fast by delivering a lecture to him for more than four times, but he once sees a traffic accident which causes the death of four people, this scene will be more effective than a million lectures. Hence, let your child be in front of a situation, a problem, or an event and explain it to him.
